match-point

holy crap! 5th set of the us open men's final!!!! i have no nails left!
tennis is often used as an analogy for acting: this back and forth effort that keeps a ball in play. the ball is the story and players are the characters. unfortunately, just like athletes, some actors want to beat their partner, but when you have one that can just hit the ball back, the entertainment is endless.
i really don't pay attention to sports, except for the olympics, but i know other games must inspire similar emotions in people. my husband tries to get me excited with underdog stories of football players, but its not the same for me.* i just dig the tennis! the player's personalities are well defined and visible. (a certain female player unfortunately demonstrated some of hers this week.) also the spectators are so close and like an audience in a theater. they could even be considered another character in the show. the camera has constant cutaways to reactions of trainers and spouses. plus good commentators can articulate the meaning of it all.
i am sad the gentleman of tennis got tired, but excited and inspired by a new champion fulfilling the dream of a lifetime. (those tears!)
maybe i'll dust off my own racket this weekend. one of these days i really have to learn how to serve...
*i do like football parties... :)

Never even dawned on me how similar tennis is to acting! Don't worried, football parties are still the best part of enjoying the sport of football, especially those Super Bowl parties! Thanks for this blog..I was not expecting it so soon!!!

  9. Wow, what a treat, another blog =) I sometimes find myself getting caught up in sports moments too although I'm not as into sports in general either. It's amazing how a game or a match can take on a new meaning when applied to other situations in life. Or just the exhiliration when you can tell someone or a team really is experiencing pure and true happiness. To somewhat be "a part of" that is nice. Thanks for blogging again and sharing your thoughts.

  10. Hey Megan,

Joe was captain of the tennis team in high school, so I learned to respect, appreciate and enjoy the game. What I learned is that it takes talent, skill, determination, perserverance, intelligence and grace to win. I also learned that sometimes you lose a set or two, but you can still win the match.

So, applying this to you and GH, you are a winner, Megan. Others, who shall remain nameless, may try to scrap, sleaze and claw (no pun intended) their way to the win, (and they may win a set or two) but you have all the qualities needed to win the match. The only problem is overcoming bad calls by the referees! But then again, the commentators and the audience will certainlly point out their errors in judgement.

Determination, perserverance and talent will win the game! Play well, play hard and have fun. BTW, you really are brilliant!

    love, peace & happiness,

    guess who

  11. Happy dance, Megan's talking sports!!! BIG GRIN:)

Although many probably think I'm obsessed with sports or something lol by my posts etc out on the boards, really I'm not. But living in the sports Hub of the universe, Boston, it is hard not to pay attention to a game or two. Whether the beloved Red Sox or Patriots, Celtics - so much history. The pure "thrill of victory and the agony of defeat" - gotta love it. Give me a team or a player (or an actress) to root for and I can pretty much enjoy any sport (except maybe soccer lol).

Last night for example, all day the buzz was Tom Brady's return after missing all of last season with a knee injury. There was no question the Patriots would be victorious, but rather by how much. Patriots by far the favorites and yet as the game played out, missed opportunity after missed opportunity, time slipping away. Patriots now down 11 points with less than 5 minutes to go. Through perfect execution the Patriots manage to score a touch down yet still need at least one more to win this game. 2+ minutes now remain and they kick the ball to the Bills. The Bill's player receives the ball in the endzone and can just take a knee and the ball will be moved out to the 20 yard line but he decides to return it and the Patriots force a fumble! The Pats go on to score the touchdown to win 25-24. The Bills outplayed the Patriots in nearly every aspect of the game, but one mistake cost them the win - again.

Within each game there are endless substories that I won't even bore you with (it is in this Megan that I think you could really like sports) - When my husband would give me a hard time about watching GH I would bring to his attention all the drama surrounding the games and the players. PLEASE, off field antics, trades, rumors, steriods and heck men creating their own fantasy teams for Lord's sake!

I'm glad you enjoyed the tennis match. It sounds like a good one! If you ever find yourself on the east coast and you're looking for that up-close feel of a game might I suggest Fenway Park. Perhaps you could sit in Ben and Jennifer's section right by the Sox dugout or of course I'd be happy to host you :)

  12. I used to play tennis when I was in high school and I was pretty good at it. When I went to college I stooped playing. But I have to say watching the US Open has inspired me to pick up my racket again. I love the analogy between tennis and acting. I never thought of it that way. But you are right. Some of the best scenes in plays, movies and soap operas are when the actors are "just hitting the ball back and forth" and one is not over powering the other. I seem to know an actrees who is very good at doing that when she is in scenes with Mr. Beanrd. Thanks again for your food for thought.

  13. Loved the analogy…it really does make perfect sense.

I've was glued to the TV for 2 weeks...there were so many really hard-fought matches. I loved watching Melanie taking out all those seeded players, especially after losing the first sets..."believe." Hated to see Andy R lose, but at least it was to a fellow American. And seeing Kim C win after just coming back was awesome. And just how cute is little Jada? I was cheering for Roger...but, the great thing about that match and so many of the others is that the player who "lost" didn't really lose (well, there was that one exception---and that was just really sad to see such a display and with no real remorse in the press conference afterwards), they simply got beat by a player who, in some cases, just hit a couple of shots better or played a couple of points smarter than they did. The level of play was extraordinary.

And there wasn't just good tennis on...I got to see Tiger shoot that 62 and Angela S eagle 18 to get into a playoff (she didn't win, but still a good effort).

    Thanks for the blog!

  14. thank you for playing tennis even when others are playing ping pong.

    :)

  15. btw, that comparison came from an acting coach both maurice and i studied with. when howard used the analogy, it was a light bulb moment for me. i have been able to articulate both the pleasure and the pain of acting with it. and did so for too many hours to count with mr. benard himself...

  16. Aww Megan...you're too cute! Thanks again for your awesomeness. Two blogs in one week!!!!!!

*And by the way...the best football parties are the ones thrown by Seahawk fans.* ;)

  17. Ok do we need to start over since you Blogged within a blog! You and Maurice really served that ball back and forth a lot of times. Not sure how the score is kept in tennis but I know love is in there somewhere. We are still hoping for rematch with you and Maurice someday but until then the ball is in your court and it is your serve!

  18. and each time with Mr Bernard was just as exciting & breath takingly beautiful as the last. When watching you guys together in a scene it was pure magic because as a viewer you never knew what to expect but you def knew it was going to be something incredible. the vibe that Kate and Sonny gave off each other was like Bjorn Borg vs John McEnroe. Edge of the seat, witty, dynamic & never can be repeated with other "opponents". Still anxiously waiting for a rematch for these two characters :-)~ But for now i am def more then content just to see you on screen and showing others how it is really done. A true professional who can grace any script with such ease... I sit back in awe as always . Thanks Megan!

  20. I did not watch the U.S. Open but I heard about "a certain female player". Did not expect that.

Not really a tennis player but I do like to attempt it occasionally. But, honestly, I must say I'm really awesome at ping pong. :P

Love the tennis/acting analogy! Thanks for another great blog! =)

So you and Maurice had an acting coach...so fabulously awesome to find that out. I definitely got the impression that your work together is like batting that ball back and forth...just gets better and better!

  26. OOO, two blogs! Right on! I love watching tennis, too. I totally agree with you about the player's personalities being visible. They literally wear their heart of their sleeves and it is awesome to watch. Love your analogies!

Hope all is well and that you are enjoying your week. Thanks for blogging, Megan! :D

  27. Whoooo Hooo, Megan is a big time tennis fan. Happy dance, happy dance!!! Another thing we have in common, along with our love of Pocky. Granted I have not been as devoted to tennis since my favs Stefan/Steffi retired but I do stop and watch when I stumble upon it while channel surfing. The men's match was actions, I was cheering for Roger but am glad to see Juan won. My what a forehand. But I was most excited to see Kim C. won, she was too talented to retired so young. This has been fun we should chat sports(tennis) again. Thanks Megan.

  28. Thanks for blogging again so soon! You had me from Holy Crap..... :-) When you are talking sports, my antenna perks right up. This year's U.S. Open had many exciting moments. I was totally captivated by Melanie Oudin. Sorry to say I missed the men's final. (but, I am watching a repeat showing right now.) Have to agree with your hubby tho. Football Rocks! (as do the parties)....

Sooooo miss those many hours you spent volleying with Mr. Benard. What we wouldn't give for just 3 minutes of Skate now!!!

    Love Forty hehehe

  29. Roger Federer probably will be remembered as the best tennis player ever. I have had the privilege to watch him play in person--he is an artist just as you are an artist. It will be interesting to see if Del Potro is the real deal but he was magnificent the other evening.

As a teenager and in my 20's I played tournament tennis but I was no artist (maybe that is why I now play golf-which is harder, you can not make a mistake). My only advice to you is that most tennis matches for us regular folks are not won, they are lost. So once you get your serve down (not that hard) remember your opponent is more apt to lose a match, than you winning. But if they lose, you win.

Hey Spin, I can not believe that Buffalo lost--another example of losing vs. winning. I will be at the Jets/Patriots game this weekend and will learn if the Jets are the real deal--with Michelle's favorite quaterback Sanchez. I hope they are the real deal but who knows.

  30. WOW, another blog so soon! How wonderful it is to here from you twice in one week. Your insight on everything from movies, to food to TENNIS is always great to read. I played Tennis for a semester when I was in school and though it was fun, I do have to admit I did not work as hard at practicing as I could have. Maybe I should try to pick up the game again. LOL

Thanks for the blog Megan! Looking forward to reading many more.

    Love and support always,

  32. Oh man a sports blog. LOVE IT! Sports is big in my home and nothing bigger than hockey. And this was perfectly timed for the beginning of the pre-season.

As a long suffering Toronto Maple Leafs fan (the last time the Leafs won the Stanley Cup you weren't even born yet!) I live and die with my team. Just like I live and die with my fave GH character. I love the tennis/acting analogy and thank you for yet another way to look at how you do your job.

Here's hoping for a good long volley with a partner who simply wants to play a damn good game.

Wishing it for you, and for us.

  33. Wow...a blog and a comment in one day, Megan just served an "ACE" for me right there! Tennis is my favorite sport and I regret it now I didn't continue playing after high school, my coach said I was very good!
As much as I love watching Tennis I prefer to watch the rematch between you and Maurice and bite my nails with joy!

Very interesting analogy between tennis and acting. As usual you gave me something to think about. Thanks!

  34. Sports talk, something I totally get. After reading your blog and your comment I can only add one thing. Watching you perform and watching you and mr. benard perform together you demonstrate the game at the elite level. The audience is gripped to their seats, watching every last move, and hoping it never ends.

Now, about your serve; it’s all in the toss. Add a little “timing” and you got it.
